AbstractThe Red Bean Tree House Causerie on Poems is a long neglected Qing 清 dynasty (1644—1911) poetic causerie, the exact author of which is generally considered irretrievable by contemporary academia. Drawing from a variety of sources such as the preface of the Guochao jifu shizhuan 國朝畿輔詩傳 compiled by Tao Liang's 陶樑 (1772—1857) et al., the contents of the Red Bean Tree House Causerie on Poems, and the life of Tao, the present article concludes that Tao is the author of the causerie. The latter half of the article briefly introduces the causerie by way of four categories according to its contents: (1) the documentation of significant events or anecdotes from the lives of the poets for commendation; (2) extensive discussions on the styles, characteristics and achievements of the poets' pieces; (3) exemplifications of the best lines from poems of various formats; and (4) appraisals on selected pieces, especially those representative of the poets.
