A Preliminary Investigation of the 'Red Bean Tree House Causerie on Poems'

Abstract

The Red Bean Tree House Causerie on Poems is a long neglected Qing 清 dynasty (1644—1911) poetic causerie, the exact author of which is generally considered irretrievable by contemporary academia. Drawing from a variety of sources such as the preface of the Guochao jifu shizhuan 國朝畿輔詩傳 compiled by Tao Liang's 陶樑 (1772—1857) et al., the contents of the Red Bean Tree House Causerie on Poems, and the life of Tao, the present article concludes that Tao is the author of the causerie. The latter half of the article briefly introduces the causerie by way of four categories according to its contents: (1) the documentation of significant events or anecdotes from the lives of the poets for commendation; (2) extensive discussions on the styles, characteristics and achievements of the poets' pieces; (3) exemplifications of the best lines from poems of various formats; and (4) appraisals on selected pieces, especially those representative of the poets.

《紅豆樹館詩話》是一種長期備受冷落的清代（1644-1911 )詩話。 當代學者多認為現在已經無法確切知道它的作者是誰。 本論文結合清代陶樑 (1772-1857) 編撰的《國朝畿輔詩傳》的序文、《紅豆樹館詩話》的內容以及 陶樑的生平事跡等幾方面所提供的資料來考證， 斷定《詩話》的作者就是陶樑。論文的下半部把《詩話》的內容歸併為四類，略加介紹：一、記述詩人生平重要 事跡或軼事趣聞， 藉以表彰其人；二、泛論詩人作品的風格、特徵或成就；三、 列舉詩人各體詩的佳句；四、評論詩人的個別篇章，尤其是有代表性的作品。
