AbstractResearch using pluri-potent human embryonic stem cells (ESC) has raised hopes that tissues incapable of selfregeneration when damaged, e.g. brain, heart, pancreatic Islet cells etc., can now be replaced by coaxing ESC to become the damaged tissue, potentially curing heart disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and diabetes. However, the use of ESC has also sparked an intense worldwide moral debate. This paper reviews and discusses the ethical issues of ESC research.
