Abstract | Antimonial antileishmanial drugs may owe their activity to the formation of a 1:1 complex between Sb and trypanothione - A glutathione/spermidine conjugate that is essential for the growth and survival of trypanosomatid protozoan parasites such as Leishmania. On the basis of the MS and 2D NMR data of the complex, a structure is proposed in which a Sb(III) ion is bound to the S atoms of cysteine residues, and the coordination sphere of Sb is completed by the oxygen atom of a water molecule (O(W); see picture). |
