Objectives To describe the oral quality of life in the elderly in Guangdong Province and the influence of various social factors and clinical oral health status on the oral quality of life in the study population. Methods A total of 1,515 65~74 year-old Chinese living in Guangdong Province were recruited through multi-stage cluster sampling. The study subjects were interviewed by trained interviewers and clinically examined by calibrated examiners following the criteria recommended by the WHO (1997). Results The weighted proportions of the elderly who reported oral disease symptoms in the previous year, perceived their oral health to be poor, perceived the appearance of their teeth to be poor, reported avoiding laughing or smiling due to poor perceived appearance of teeth, avoiding conversation because of oral health problems, reported inability to chew hard foods were 63%, 46%, 39%, 10%, 14% and 40% respectively. Those who were with higher DT and higher MT tended to have worse oral quality of life. Some socio-economic indexes were found related with oral quality of life. Conclusions These findings suggest that oral quality of life were affected by oral health status and by social factors in some measures in this study population.
