AbstractThe awareness of the potential for transmission of infectious agents, such as the human immundeficiency virus (HIV), in the dental clinic has resulted in a renewed respect for principles and practice of infection control. Hence a vast number of articles have appeared in both the dental and the medical literature on this subject. This series of articles is an attempt to summarise the available data on infection control in dentistry with emphasis on practical infection control in the clinical environment. In this first article the author reviews the infectious diseases which have the potency of transmission in such a clinical setting.
