AbstractStudy casts are the only non-invasive three-dimensional records that provide information which is important for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This article provides an overview of the use of study casts in orthodontics. Various methods of space analysis, relevant information that can be obtained from study casts and their limitations are elaborated. However, special attention and techniques are required in order to fully utilize the study casts. It should be emphasized that study models are absolutely essential as starting and finishing records in orthodontic treatments, apart from constituting critical medico-legal evidence. Not having starting study models could be a ground for allegations of negligence.
