| Description | The use of technology in education is not new but, generally speaking, has been a sustaining innovation in the sense of supporting existing pedagogy. Overhead projectors and PowerPoint slides for classroom presentation are examples. However, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) with wireless connectivity used both in and out of the classroom present a different set of considerations. These devices are a sustaining innovation on the part of students who, in one way or another, are continuously “online” but are, in part, a disruptive innovation seen from the viewpoint of instructors. In this sense, PDAs enable creation of an individual student centered learning space in a way that we have not historically experienced. City University of Hong Kong has, for the past two years, provided each incoming student in the Faculty of Business with a wireless PDA. This seminar will focus on applications and experiences to date with special attention paid to the impact on student learning and implications for faculty development. Douglas R. Vogel is Professor (Chair) of Information Systems at the City University of Hong Kong and an AIS Fellow. He received his M.S. in Computer Science from U.C.L.A. in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Minnesota in 1986. Professor Vogel has published widely and directed extensive research on group support systems and technology support for education. He has been ranked 3rd in a journal report of top researchers in Group Support Systems and ranked 10th in a worldwide list of top researchers in MIS as well as 4th in the list of most collaborative information systems researchers. Professor Vogel is especially active in introducing group support technology into enterprises and educational systems and researching mobile e-learning applications. |
