Abstract(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540. Within its 460-years history, it has developed into an extensive Catholic congregation. Although there has been a downward trend in the number of Jesuits around the world, nowadays approximately 20,000 Jesuits are still serving in different corners of the world. Among different aspects of its services, the Society of Jesus has accepted its greatest recognition in educational field for their renowned educational organizations around the world. Many of their graduates have great achievement in politics, business and cultural fields. In another words, the Society of Jesus is being seen as assurance of high quality education. In 1926, Irish Jesuits have been called to set foot on Hong Kong, where they started different kinds of educational services. Their effort has important contribution to the development of Hong Kong education. With special reference to the Kowloon Wah Yan College, this dissertation aims at studying the provision of educational services by the Society of Jesus in Hong Kong. Chapter One will describe the establishment, development and the course of life of the founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, of the Society. Chapter Two will examine the evolution of the Society' s education provision and their features in order to understand its success in educational field. Chapter Three will study the development of the Society in Mainland China where it has provided educational services since the nineteenth century. This Chapter will also examine the provision of different educational services of the Society in Hong Kong. Focusing on various aspects of the Kowloon Wah Yan College such as its history, Log Books and achievements of its graduates, Chapter Four will analyze the relationship between the College and Hong Kong history, and that between the College and the education mission of the Society. In the conclusion, the success of the Society' s education and its contribution to Hong Kong society will be comprehensively investigated. 2
