Abstract“Cantonese Literature” is a crucial topic in the field of Hong Kong Literature, which has been primarily focusing on the genre of fiction. This research, rather, shifts the focus to San-su (Kao Xiong)’s “Bizarre Commentaries,” as appeared on Xinsheng Wanbao and Ming Pao from 1940s to 1970s. Bizarre Commentaries involves Cantonese Literature, Column Essays, Parody, and more. This research attempts to critically evaluate San-su’s Bizarre Commentaries. Building upon Bourdieu’s work on Sociology of literature, and Genre Studies, as well as Bakhtin’s theories on Dialogism and Carnivalesque, this research attempts to discuss the reciprocal relationship and the intersection between local and community culture, genre and the production of literature. This paper first examines how Parody from the late Qing Dynasty developed into 1940s Bizarre Commentaries, followed by a discussion on the popularization of Bizarre Commentaries in the 40s. Probing into how local and community cultures of Guangdong and Hong Kong affect the production of literature and the development of genres. Building upon these discissions, this paper examines the way in which Bizarre Commentaries, as a variant of Parody, intersects with San- su’s literary style and the production of literature. This paper concludes with a discission on Bizarre Commentaries, as a form of Column Essay, from the perspective of conversational analysis, by posing the following question: In what way does the characteristics of this genre affects San-su’s response to various political discourses in Hong Kong, and how Hong Kong is expressed by the Bizarre Commentaries. Through examining the way in which Hong Kong is represented in Bizarre Commentaries, this paper explores the interaction and intersection between genre, the dialogistic of column essay, and the construction of local identity.
