AbstractThe significance of Mount Changbai/Baekdu was originally a cultural construction in the 17th century to secure the authority of the ruling families of the Qing and Chosŏn kingdoms. It was inherited by nationalists since the late 19th century for the reconstruction of the national imagination of China and two Koreas as modern nation-states. Recently, the cultural significance of Mount Changbai/Baekdu has been utilized by Chinese and Korean corporations to capitalize on resources from the landscape. The landscape of Mount Changbai/Baekdu should be understood as a process by which social and subjective identities are formed and reformed.
