AbstractUtilizing an acid and a base to generate electricity is a valuable experience for students to (i) realize the importance of electrochemical power sources and (ii) develop fundamental knowledge related to energy and electrochemistry. We apply an acid–base battery with oxygen electrodes to demonstrate electrochemical power sources in the laboratory. This battery consists of an acidic oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode and an alkaline oxygen evolution reaction at the anode. This demonstration provides an attractive and instructive activity for laboratory courses in electrochemistry.
