AbstractThe book chapter outlines the short history of the Berlin office of Jebsen & Co. which existed from 1954 to 1956. It details the reasons for the establishment of the office, with Ludwig Werner as its representative, his style of management, and the results of this endeavour. Additionally, Werner’s correspondence from the period contains information about the China National Import and Export Corporation (CNIEC) and its office in Berlin, revealing the background and workings of this Chinese state organisation. Until now, the history of the Berlin and Bern offices has only been covered in Dieter von Hansemann’s book, Jebsen & Co. Ltd., Hongkong: Die Geschichte der Firma – 1945 bis zur Gegenwart (Aabenraa, 1988). Despite having a chapter („Jebsen-Stützpunkte Berlin und Bern 1954-1972”) on this topic, it is mainly based on Werner’s memoirs and mostly devoted to the much longer history of the Bern office of Jebsen & Co. (1957-1972). To delve deeper into the activities of the Berlin office, this book chapter makes use of one of the central files in the “Ludwig Werner” collection (numbering 113 files in total) kept at the Jebsen & Jessen Historical Archives (JJHA) in Aabenraa, Denmark. Two files of correspondence between Werner and Michael Jebsen, Hans Jacob Jebsen, and Arwed Peter Jessen, the three partners of Jebsen & Co., were also used. Relevant secondary sources in German, English, and Chinese provided the necessary historical background.
