Abstract | This paper discusses the challenges facing urban transportation in China. It reviews key research findings and strategic policies aimed at addressing these challenges. Although a great deal of research has been undertaken and a series of policies have been formulated, there are still notable gaps in the research, in the policies, and between the research and policies. Topics such as public participation, equity, non-motorized transportation (cyclists and pedestrians), and transportation financing have not been fully addressed. To overcome this, the paper recommends that research and policy formulation be subject to regular evaluation and review. The paper suggests forming new partnerships between researchers and policy makers and establishing a national library and a statistics agency on urban transportation. |
