Abstract | Internet has changed our ways of communication. The language in computer-mediated communication (CMC) is found to be different from that in speech and writing. Differences are mainly found in graphology and lexicon in the previous studies conducted in English-speaking countries. The number of CMC studies in Hong Kong is very limited and most of them are one-to-one real-time CMC study. In this research, 157 popular lexicons are collected from the Hong Kong Golden Forum, an online discussion forum in Hong Kong that allows one-to-many asynchronous communication. The linguistic features and the words formation methods are analyzed in order to investigate whether the change of language happens mainly on graphology and lexicons or such change is even extended to the grammatical aspect. Four kinds of linguistic features are identified in the present study. They are representations of Cantonese, English and Putonghua characterized by playing with sound, shortening, intentional typographical mistake and creative formation of new vocabularies. The word formation methods and frequency distributions of the methods resonate with that of Cantonese. The reasons for adopting those linguistic features are also identified and it is believed that they are related to the influence of the medium and the need for identification with the community. This study shows that the changes are mainly found in the representation method instead of the grammatical rules behind. |
