AbstractThe OCS explores the art and legacy of Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766) through a special exhibition organised by the National Palace Museum to mark the tricentennial of his arrival in China in 1715. Known by his Chinese name, Lang Shining 郎世寧, Castiglione served the Qing court for fifty years under three emperors, Kangxi (1662–1722), Yongzheng (1723–1735) and Qianlong (1736–1795), adapting Western artistic methods, materials and technologies to Chinese tastes, in the service of the court. We will examine the cultural, artistic and political factors that nurtured Castiglione's influences in painting, the decorative arts as well as print.
