AbstractA study of the relationship between earthquake seismicity of Heyuan area and water level of Xinfengjiang Reservoir has been carried out because the seismic activity is the highest in Guangdong province and the seismic activity is originated in Xinfengjiang Reservoir, i.e. reservoir-induced earthquakes. Therefore, the risk of earthquake in these area is high. The objective of the study was to find out the mechanism that triggering seismicity in Xinfengjiang Reservoir, investigate the relationship between the water level of the Reservoir and the frequency and magnitude of seismicity and suggest measures to minimize the chances of reservoir-induced seismicity. Data of water level and seismic activity has been obtained from the government authorities such as Guangdong Seismological Bureau and Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province, and other sources such as journals. It is concluded that the water level of the Reservoir affected the seismicity in the first few years after impoundment. Then, the relationship between them is not significant. Also, the seismic activities are closely related to the geological setting, for example rock types and faulting in the area.
