| Abstract | This talk will begin with a survey of the law governing death and dying and the modern push toward statutory definitions of death. But what happens when a person is not brain dead, but has no reasonable prospect of normal existence? When may life support be withdrawn from someone in a PVS, or having ‘intolerable’ quality of life? The law relating to advance directives will be examined, and the talk will conclude with a consideration of recent cases from the UK and Canada on under what circumstances a terminally ill person may be helped to die.
