AbstractBACKGROUND: It has been considered that repeated episodes of depression can promote cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the biological mechanisms of how depression leads to cognitive impairment are largely unknown. Among different factors leading to depression, it is unclear of how increase in corticosterone leads to neurodegeneration. We hypothesize that corticosterone induces degeneration of synapses and axons in hippocampal neurons so that it promotes cognitive impairment in AD.
