AbstractPresented is a variational formulation with specific functionals for general electromagnetic problems involving anisotropic media. For purposes of clarity, only specific functionals are considered. These cases were investigated; 1) lossy problems involving anisotropic media with symmetric permittivity and permeability, 2) lossless problems involving anisotropic media with Hermitian permittivity and permeability, and 3) general problems involving general anisotropic media. Results for each case were presented. Finally, the formulation is expected to provide a foundation and guidelines for the development of finite element method for solving electromagnetic problems involving anisotropic media.
