Abstract | A theory of the orbital ordering and the anomalous antiferromagetism in V2O3 is developed on the basis of realistic description of the V3+ atomic states. The effective electronic degrees of freedom in the insulating phase are found to be successively reduced into a set of molecular orbitals of V-pair along the trigonal axis. It is shown that the AF atomic orbital correlation involved in the molecular state is a key factor for the complex magnetic properties of V2O3. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |
