AbstractThe hierarchy of fractional quantum Hall states of a two-dimensional electron gas in a high magnetic field is studied quantitatively. The effect of impurities is found to rescale, eventually terminating the hierarchy. The conditions on the impurities and the magnetic fields for the existence of the fractional quantum Hall effect at rational Landau-level fillings are derived. © 1986 The American Physical Society.
