AbstractTo develop a Chinese version of the Self-Report Altruism Scale (C-SRA scale), two bilingual Chinese achieved consensus in their translation of the Hindi version of Rushton, Chrisjohn and Fekken's Self-Report Altruism Scale (SRA-scale). Two hundred and forty-seven adolescents (157 males and 90 females) completed the C-SRA scale and Child Altruism Inventory (CAI), and peer-ratings of their helping behaviour were obtained. Internal consistency of the C-SRA scale was high (alpha = 0.86) and its split-half reliability was also quite good (0.79). Estimate of concurrent validity indicated a moderate level of correlation between the C-SRA scale and CAI. The criterion validity of the C-SRA scale was also established by finding a high correlation between the C-SRA scale and peer ratings for altruistic behaviour. The findings suggest that the C-SRA scale is suitable for use in research. Copyright © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
