AbstractA simple expression is derived for estimation of the additional power reduction (APR) offered by fast power control (FPC) over slow power control (SPC) in multimedia communications over wireless local area networks (WLANs). The expression is given in terms of the outage-probability requirement of multimedia communications and the probability density function (or cumulative distribution function) of the channel power gain perturbed by fast fading. The derived result is used to investigate achievable APRs for WLANs operating on Rician-fading channels with or without diversity reception. The results indicate that using FPC instead of SPC yields a substantial reduction of transmit power for multimedia communications involving hand-held portable computing devices.
