AbstractA large-scale planting project in a new town in Hong Kong required a substantial volume of soil which was obtained in situ from the fish ponds developed on coastal mudflats. Massive mortality of plants belonging to different growth forms in less than a year suggest a common soil malady. The major problem appeared to be the development of extreme acidity (pH 4) due to oxidation of the reduced sulphur triggered by mechanical manipulation. -from Author
