| Abstract | A component with an optimized combination of different materials (including homogeneous and heterogeneous materials) in its different regions for a specific application is termed as a component made of a multiphase perfect material (CMMPM). For selecting suitable materials for CMMPMs in their material design, a material database, which covers homogeneous materials and different types of heterogeneous materials, is needed. This paper introduces the development of such a database, including the determination of its design requirements, the selection of its database management system, the creation of its database model, its development method, and the details of its sub-databases for composite materials, functionally gradient materials, and heterogeneous materials with a periodic microstructure, respectively. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
