AbstractGenerating a realistic wind field is a crucial element of air pollution modelling in complex terrain such as that of Hong Kong. A sophisticated non-hydrostatic Canadian mesoscale meteorological model (MC2) has been applied for this purpose. This paper gives a short description of the model and describes its adaptation to Hong Kong conditions: setting up the nested grids, processing the geophysical and meteorological input data, etc. Results of early model simulations are presented and briefly discussed. The model is proved to be capable of predicting high-resolution, three-dimensional fields of wind and other meteorological parameters, using reasonable computer time and memory resources. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
