Abstract | Bone is a nanoscale composite with mechanical properties which cannot be duplicated by monolithic materials. Composite systems for bone replacement have been developed using various bioactive ceramic or glass reinforcements in a bioinert polymer matrix. The mechanical behaviour of these composites is dependent upon the interface between the composite components, which in turn affect the interface with the biological system. © 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc. |
