AbstractThe characteristics of the standard deviations of wind component and wind direction were studied experimentally. It was found that these standard deviations related to one another and correlated well with persistence. Improved estimators of these standard deviations are presented and compared with standard estimators from literature. The estimator for the standard deviations of wind component is also derived analytically, which compares well with field measurement data. The estimator for the standard deviation of wind direction, obtained from curve fitting of the available field measurement data, was found to be better than the previously published estimators in terms of correlation coefficient, mean percentage error and maximum percentage error.
