AbstractThis paper first looks at the problems related to the current use of computer systems in structural engineering problem solving. It then examines the lessons learned from the design and implementation of an 'intelligent' structural design system, IPDOS [C.K. Soh and A.K. Soh, Comput. Struct. 46, 759-769 (1993)], for the preliminary design of fixed onshore structures. Finally, from the current limitations of IPDOS, the paper projects the requirements and development of next generation structural engineering systems to overcome the inherent weaknesses of current systems. © 1994.
