AbstractWitten's topological quantum Yang-Mills theory is studied in temporal gauge. It is argued that Donaldson polynomials are nonzero only when supersymmetry is unbroken and their nontriviality is due to the anomaly of charge U. The anomalous divergence of the U-current is shown to be the local index of the elliptic complex in instanton theory.
