AbstractThis paper proposes and outlines a generic framework which can be easily tailored or extended for developing and applying various design for X (DFX) tools quickly with consistency. Problems surrounding the DFX technology are examined. The need and feasibility for such a generic framework are discussed. The conceptual framework is transformed into a practical DFX shell by introducing a number of formal but pragmatic constructs. The practicality is evaluated against the effectiveness and ease-of-use requirements.
