AbstractAn overview is given of communications networks in which multiple terminals share the same channel in their attempt to communicate. The author briefly surveys the following multiaccess schemes and protocols: the ALOHA protocol, splitting algorithms, carrier-sense multiaccess (CSMA), time-division multiaccess (TDMA), frequency-division multiacess (FDMA), and reservation-based protocols. Protocols used in satellite networks, local area networks, and packet radio networks are briefly reviewed.
