AbstractPolycrystalline semiconductors are presently receiving much attention because of their potential for low-cost thin-film solar cells. Both Schottky barriers and p-n junctions are being examined as collectors of the minority carriers optically generated in these materials. This paper focuses on the problems raised by recombination of the minority carriers at grain boundaries, and the resultant degradation of the electrical characteristics of polycrystalline solar cells.
