Abstract | "Youth" in its modern incarnations was profoundly shaped by the exigencies and flows of empire, by anxieties surrounding Europe's imperial future and aspirations for national (re)birth. This paper takes the case of young Vietnamese on the move, who travelled to and from France, often as students but also as casual labourers on board ocean-going vessels. It uses literary sources, personal correspondence, and police interviews to examine the multivaried meanings of youth that these Vietnamese youth, most of whom were young men, fashioned in response to their predicament … |
