AbstractIn almost one third of the units studied, there is no restriction whatsoever on smoking by patients. In acute wards the situation is a little better at 27%. Most of those patients who are in hospital with cigarette related diseases are in 'acute' wards. It has been estimated that in 1965 over 1,100 hospital beds in Scotland were occupied by patients who would not have been there if they had not smoked, the socalled 'cigarette beds' (Heasman). In this survey, two wards devoted to coronary care, intensive care or renal dialysis allowed unrestricted smoking.
