AbstractElectro-kinetic flows occur when an externally applied electric field is imposed across a saturated or partly saturated porous medium. This paper presents the on-going research at Texas A&M University on electro-kinetic extraction of contaminants from fine-grained soils, sealing leaks of operating surface impoundment by electrophoresis of bentonite, and detection and delineation of subsurface contamination by cone penetration technology. These applications demonstrate the high potential of electro-kinetics to be applied to environmental geotechniques.
