AbstractIn fetal hamster ovaries maintained in organ culture meiosis can proceed, if the ovaries are removed from the fetus after the onset of meiosis. Ovaries without rete will not show meiosis in culture, if removed before gestational age 14 days. Ovaries with rete, however, will initiate meiosis even if explanted on gestational day 14. Ovaries with rete, but not testes, will initiate meiosis in testes. The meiosis initiating factor may be identical with a PAS positive substance actively secreted by the rete at the stage when meiosis commences.
