AbstractEffects of various antibiotics and of addition of various sugars as sole carbon source to minimal nutrient agar base were studied in order to develop a simple and reliable method for selective enumeration of L acidophilus in yogurt containing Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium spp. Application of antibiotics was found to be unsuitable for selective enumeration of L acidophilus. Use of salicin as a sole carbon source in the minimal nutrient base medium was found to suppress the growth of all the 4 groups of bacteria studied except that of L. acidophilus. Salicin medium was successfully used for selective enumeration of L acidophilus from pure cultures and from yogurts containing the 4 groups of lactic acid bacteria.
