| Abstract | We study platform device innovation under industry structures based on open and proprietary operating systems. An open-platform industry fosters intra-network competition among device producers. Greater quality degradation of the existing devices incentivizes innovation by the potential entrants. In a proprietary-platform industry, the platform owner has full control over the device product line. The innovation incentive is driven by inter-network competition. |
