Abstract | BACKGROUND: The identification of SARS coronavirus as the cause of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the detection of closely related coronaviruses in bats and palm civets suggest that animals may be the natural reservoirs of coronaviruses, and occasional interspecies transmission from animals to humans can result in severe zoonotic disease outbreaks. Coronavirus surveillance in different animal hosts especially those in close contact with human beings is vital for the preparedness of the next disease out... |
