AbstractThis paper is an ethnographic study of a volunteer police force in a village in Southern Taiwan, focused on identifying the cultural motivations of its functional operations. By reference to a discussion of how this institution fits into a larger division of social control labor, I argue that we should understand it as an active and organic element within the cultural constitution of the state.
