Abstract | The Three Gorges water conservancy project is a key backbone engineering for the development and harnessing of the Changjiang River. The main purposes of this project are flood control of the middle and lower reaches, particularly the Jingjiang reach, electricity generation for central China, east China and Sichuan Province, improvement of navigation in the reach from Yichang to Chongqing and the middle reach. Through long years of study on the general layout, many important technical issues in design of the dam have been solved. This paper presents an introduction to the studies of some major technical problems, such as the selection of dam site, layout of the dam, powerhouses, navigation structures, sand and floater releasing structures, river diversion and cutoff, navigation during construction, and sedimentation. ©. |
