AbstractElectronic transition spectrum of IrP in the spectral region between 390 and 471 nm has been recorded and analyzed using laser vaporization/reaction free jet expansion and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Reacting laser-ablated iridium atoms with 1% PH 3 seeded in argon produced the IrP molecule. Five electronic transition systems were identified and rotationally resolved transition lines of both the 191IrP and 193IrP isotopes were analyzed. Least squares fit of the rotational lines yielded molecular constants for the upper and lower states. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The work described here was supported by a grant from the Research Grants Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China (Project No. HKU 7014/06P). We would like to thank Professors Allan Adam and Colan Linton (University of New Brunswick, Canada) for communicating to us the molecular constants for the IrP molecule before publication and the discussion concerning the ground state. We also thank Professor Colin M. Western (University of Bristol, UK) for sending us a copy of the PGOPHER software and helping us to use the program.
