Abstract | Due to urbanization and economic development, the metabolic syndrome has
become prevalent in Asia and will be an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.
Overeating and lack of physical activity lead to central obesity, the metabolic syndrome
and cardiovascular diseases. Excess fat increases fatty acids in the blood, and also causes
local and widespread inflammation. This inflammation is harmful to blood vessels and
leads to endothelial dysfunction, high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. Lifestyle
modification is the key to preventing the metabolic syndrome. Metformin, acarbose and
glitazones may help to prevent the development of diabetes. Orlistat has a limited role for
treating obesity, but there are new drugs for obesity in the pipeline. |
