AbstractAcute intracranial hemorrhage (AIH) is a major cause of neurological disturbance or complication of head injury. Its presence dictates different management strategy. In modern medicine, detection of AIH relies on the use of brain computed tomography (CT). But diagnosis of AIH can become difficult when the lesion is inconspicuous or the reader is inexperienced. Therefore it has been envisaged that computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system can help improving diagnosis of AIH, especially those small lesions, and benefit clinicians of variable skill levels. This paper summarizes a previously reported computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system that aimed to help improving diagnosis of AIH on CT by clinicians of variable skill levels. This paper further discusses considerations on clinical usage that affects both the development and evaluation of CAD as exemplified by this application. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.
