AbstractThe study evaluated the effectiveness of the PBL approach in the teaching of social work theory and practice with an aim to prepare life-long learners for the social work profession. The subjects were 132 second year social work students of the undergraduate BSW program. A 40 item scale developed by the researcher was used to measure the students' self perception of social work competence and aptitude. Students' learning motives and approaches were examined using Bigg's SPQ. Results indicated positive learning outcomes with the most significant gains in knowledge, and to a lesser extent, in skills and value. Students welcomed the PBL mode and treasured in particular the relevance and practice implications of knowledge generated.
