AbstractThe scalar and velocity fields in successive vertical cross-sections of a vertical momentum jet in crossflow are studied using laser-induced fluorescence and laser-doppler anemometry techniques. Although a distinct kidney-shaped scalar field in the self-similar vortex flow can be discerned, the instantaneous scalar field is highly intermittent in nature compared to a jet in coflow or stagnant fluid. The measurements show that the vertical momentum flux associated with the jet cross-section accounts for only about half of the initial impulse imparted by the jet; this implies an added mass coefficient of k≈1. The implications of the present results on the formulation of jet integral models are discussed.
