AbstractThe study examined the effects of visual and auditory temporal processing on Chinese word reading accuracy and fluency among Chinese dyslexic children. Three groups of children (dyslexic readers, chronological age controls and reading level controls) were administered tests of visual and auditory temporal processing, rapid naming, visual-orthographic knowledge, phonological processing and morphological awareness. It was found that Chinese dyslexic children evidence visual temporal processing, phonological processing, morphological awareness and rapid naming differences that, in turn, influence their subsequent word reading accuracy but not word reading fluency. These results suggest that visual temporal deficits may contribute to reading difficulties in Chinese.
