Dr. Mei-Yun Zhang was born in China and received her B. A. with First Class Honors in 1986 and her M. Sc. Degree in 1989, both from China Agricultural University. She then received her Ph.D. in Natural Sciences in 2000 from Aachen University of Technology (RWTH-Aachen), Germany. From 1989 to 1996, she worked at the National Vaccine and Serum Institute, Ministry of Health, China, as a Research Associate, Engineer, and Senior Engineer. In 2001, she joined Dr. Dimiter Dimitrov’s laboratory at the National Cancer Institute (a division of NIH in Frederick, Maryland) as a Postdoctoral Fellow and was promoted to Scientist in 2002. In 2009, she was appointed Assistant Professor at Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. Since 2011, she has also been an Adjunct Professor in the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, China. With an established track record of research in antibodies and infectious diseases, Dr. Zhang’s current research focuses on mutable viruses, including HIV/AIDS and influenza virus, in the areas of virus entry and virus-specific antibody somatic maturation. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles in infectious disease and antibody fields, including leading scientific journals with high impact factors, such as Nature, Science, PNAS, AIDS, JV. With 23 years of experience in antibody and antibody engineering, Dr. Zhang has developed various monoclonal antibodies or antibody therapeutics against infectious diseases and cancer. She invented or co-invented 4 US patents, 1 EU patent, and 2 US Provisional Patent Applications on monoclonal antibodies against infectious diseases and cancer. She was awarded “Federal Technology Transfer Award” by NIH for seven consecutive years from 2002 to 2008. In addition, Dr. Zhang published 3 book chapters and presented her research work at various national and international conferences. Since 2002, she has delivered 12 invited talks at international as well as national conferences. She is ranked HKU scholar in the top 1%. Dr. Zhang is currently an Editorial Board Member of Journal of Bioanalysis & Biomedicine, Journal of Bioequivalence & Bioavailability, ISRN Preventive Medicine, and Journal of Virology & Retrovirology - a Symbiosis online journal. She is a Member of American Society for Virology and a Member of AIDS Vaccine for Asia Network (AVAN). In addition to her research, Dr. Zhang has been involved in teaching and student supervision in both undergraduate and graduate programs. After joining HKU, she has supervised 2 PhD theses and is currently a primary supervisor for 5 graduate students. Since 2009, Dr. Zhang has been awarded 2 RGC GRF, 2 HMRF and 1 ITF grants, from Hong Kong, all as Principle Investigator. Outside Hong Kong, Dr. Zhang was awarded 2 12th 5-year Mega Projects as Subproject leader or Co-investigator and 1 NSFC grant as Principle Investigator from Mainland China.
