Dr Poon, Angela Ming See 潘明施
Dr Poon is a medical graduate of The University of Hong Kong. After serving in the government as a medical officer, she joined the Department of Physiology as a lecturer in 1986. She also had her post graduate training in Hong Kong and obtained a master and a PhD degree from The University of Hong Kong. She has diversified research interest and has published in different fields in many peer-reviewed international journals. She has served as international journal editors and reviewers, organized many international symposia and training workshops.
Her main research focus is on the pineal hormone melatonin. Her laboratory has demonstrated that melatonin has diverse effects on various body systems like its immunostimulatory effects on immune organs including the spleen, thymus and bursa; its effects on smooth muscle contractility and membrane transport in the gut; glucose metabolism in the liver; osmoregulatory functions in organs like the avian salt glands and kidneys; antiproliferative effects on uterine stromal cells; its involvement in the pathogenesis of scoliosis. Currently, she is investigating its antioxidant effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems and the skin.
